Prof. Billington and her host, Prof. Werner Lang in Munich.

Prof. Billington was honored as a keynote speaker at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) Sustainability Day

Prof. Billington’s talk, titled “Pathways to Urban Sustainability”, focuses on the challenges and opportunities associated with a rapidly urbanizing world.

In her address, she highlights innovative research coming out of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering here at Stanford. She describes her own research journey from materials to a focus on well-being, and highlights how such work is made possible through the support of great Universities like TUM and Stanford as well as their generous donors and partners. She ends her talk placing emphasis on partnerships, scale, and systems thinking as the keys to making urban sustainability a reality.

“My hope for you is that your work will be built on strong partnerships, that it will be scaling and spreading around the world where it is needed most, and that you will have worked hard to consider all stakeholders in your solutions … to avoid unintended consequences.”
